Overload Requests

All students must carry 12 credits to maintain full-time student status.  The per semester credit max for sophomores is 17.5 credits; 19 for juniors or seniors.   If you wish to take a heavier courseload, you must request and be approved for an overload.  Submit the Overload Request eForm found on insideND eForms, which opens after first year students register.

Sophomores

  • The current credit limit maximum is 17.5 credits. With the one exception of overloads needed to carry a 5 or 6 credit language course as your fifth class, Overload Requests for both the Fall & Spring semesters of your sophomore year will be evaluated only after grades have been posted for the current term. At that time, students with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or better will be approved for an overload up to 19 credits.  Submit an Overload Request by completing the eForm via insideND.
    • Sophomores requesting more than 19 credits must meet with an advisor to discuss their request.  Students should submit the request using the eForm on insideND and post an updated plan of study on their Google Drive.  Then schedule a meeting with an advisor to review the plan and discuss your needs.
    • Sophomores with a cumulative GPA below 3.4 will need a current term GPA of at least 3.4 to be considered for an overload.
    • Sophomores who do not meet the GPA requirement will only be approved if the overload is necessary to add either a language class of 5 or 6 credits or activity credits such as band, choir or an SSLP.
  • If you feel you have an extenuating circumstance, you need to meet with an advisor in 101 Mendoza to discuss your options.

Juniors and seniors

  • The current credit limit maximum is 19 credits. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or better will be approved for an overload up to 21 credits. Submit the Overload Request eForm found on insideND.  Overloads are processed following sophomore registration and you will receive an email when your credit limit has been raised.
    • Juniors and seniors requesting more than 21 credits must meet with an advisor to discuss their request.  Students should submit the request using the eForm on insideND and post an updated plan of study on their Google Drive.  Then schedule a meeting with an advisor to review the plan and discuss your needs.
    • Students with a cumulative GPA below 3.4 will be evaluated based on their overall grade history grades have been posted for the current term.  Recent performance, reason for overload and GPA trajectory will be key factors in the decision.
    • As an exception to the above, seniors registering for their final semester will be granted the credit overloads needed to satisfy their degree requirements (within reason), PRIOR to the beginning of registration.  The 3.4 GPA requirement is waived in such cases. If you feel you have an extenuating circumstance, you need to meet with an advisor in 101 Mendoza to discuss your options.

All Years

  • Students who do not meet the GPA requirement will only be approved if the overload is necessary to add either a language class of 5 or 6 credits or activity credits such as band, choir or an SSLP. If you feel you have an extenuating circumstance, please meet with an advisor in 101 Mendoza. You may need to wait until grades for the current term are posted to be approved for an overload.  All Overload Requests are made by completing an eForm via insideND.
