Mendoza undergrads are lucky to have great experiences in and out of the classroom. We're using Put the ME in Mendoza to introduce the 2016-17 members of the Mendoza Student Leadership Association during the first few weeks of the fall. MSLA was created to build community, communication and collaboration within Mendoza so watch for invitations to their events this year! Check them out on Facebook and send any comments or suggestions to msla@nd.edu.
But enough about MSLA! Have YOU been to a conference, on an SSLP, started your own company, and/or had a really unique internship? Please share your story with us so we can share it with the world. And don't let that list limit you - all experiences welcome! Send a brief write up and photo to Alison Levey at alevey@nd.edu for consideration and posting in this space.
A senior Accounting student, and Dillon Hall RA, Freddie Stavins enjoys travel in his free time. Having traveled to 48 states in the continental U.S., Freddie looks to the likes of Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard who has been able to mesh a successful business model with corporate social responsibility (CSR) and a generous travel policy for employees. Freddie feels as though Mendoza lends itself well to understanding the greater good of business, leaving students poised for success in industry but also encouraging them to keep an open heart toward charity, environmental responsibility, and the well-being of coworkers.
Ryan is a senior IT Management and Statistics major who studied abroad in London during the spring and spent the summer interning for a consulting company in Chicago. A four-year member of Club Soccer, he's serving as the Social Commissioner/Underclassmen Liaison, although that may be a made up position. During an internship last summer with the Washington Wizards, Ryan was tasked with calling agents to confirm their accuracy of their contact information. Seemed simple enough and when he got to Shawn Carter on his spreadsheet, he made the call. It was uncomfortably late in the call that he realized he had Jay Z on the line. He has, however, come a far way since this incident and is attempting every day to learn from his mistakes.
Ben is a senior studying finance and political science. Originally from Brownsburg, Indiana, Ben is a proud Hoosier and a self-proclaimed old spirit. He enjoys cooking, personal finance, and reading science fiction. Ben also uses his business background to help teach Entrepreneurship as an AmeriCorps member at the Robinson Community Learning Center. An advocate of the unconventional, Ben encourages every student to “look to where your skillset is scarce. Where can you take what you learn in Mendoza and help those who really need it?”
Coming from Beijing, China, Mary is now a junior at Mendoza College, double majoring in Accounting and Spanish. She spent the summer interning for an investment banking department in Beijing and will study abroad in Spain next spring. During a Spanish learning program in Valparaíso, Chile this summer, Mary paid a visit to Easter Island for several days afterwards. It is such a mysterious place that has long held a strong allure. "Making friends" with different Moai, learning about the legends from the ancient tribe, and joining in local dance party under the starry night are fascinating and worthwhile, and continue to make her wonder about so many other amazing places in the world!
While studying abroad for the fall semester in Fremantle, Australia, Sasha is taking a class that travels to Singapore to gain firsthand exposure to the Asian-Pacific economy by meeting many of its successful business leaders. In Australia she's more likely to get up close and personal with native kangaroos apparently! And when back on campus, Sasha is pursuing a major in Accountancy with a minor in Science, Technology and Values.
Alex Barone is a sophomore student in Mendoza, intending to major in Finance with a supplemental major in Psychology. Originally from San Diego, California, Alex now resides in Stanford Hall where he serves as the dorm’s athletic commissioner. When he’s not deeply missing authentic Mexican food and/or the sun during winter, Alex loves to take photos. He currently runs his own photography Business specializing in fine art landscapes in both San Diego and South Bend. This is Alex’s first year in MSLA and he is excited to get to work for Mendoza and its students and faculty!
Cindy is a junior Accounting and Statistics major with a minor in Poverty Studies. She hails from North Brunswick, New Jersey and works as a teaching assistant and tutor on campus. This summer, she worked as a finance intern for Greenlee – Textron in Rockford, IL a place just slightly different from anywhere she’s ever been (those of you familiar with Rockford probably know what I’m talking about). Cindy looks forward to being a part of the MSLA team and making this academic year a good one!
Maddie is a junior Accounting major and Computing & Digital Technologies minor. Originally from Cleveland, she's a proud Cavs fan and would like to remind everyone that the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the finals. She spent the summer travelling to Atlanta, Dallas, Columbus, and Chicago for leadership conferences with accounting firms. She is interested in the crossover between assurance, tech, and cyber security, and will be interning with Deloitte in Chicago next summer in their audit practice.
Payton is a sophomore from Clarendon Hills, Illinois majoring in Marketing with a minor in Entrepreneurship. She spent the summer interning at LJM Partners, a hedge fund specializing in volatility strategies, in downtown Chicago. Payton has a passion for travel and is hoping to study abroad in London next year as well as work in global marketing one day. Her favorite thing about Mendoza is its multi-faceted approach to business, which focuses on the education of the whole person in addition to traditional disciplines.
While taking a brief break from her time at Hogwarts, Sydney is a sophomore business major, undecided between accounting and finance, with minors in anthropology and entrepreneurship. Aside from “playing” school, she plays for Notre Dame’s varsity women’s lacrosse team, yet actively avoids any extra physical exercise. Sydney enjoys figure skating, TV and movie blooper reels, and shamelessly singing anywhere at any time. Sydney spends her free time volunteering with Special Olympics and Hand in Hand ministries and hopes to study abroad this summer.
